Version 1.0 In the game

Online matches have a home

The public game server for VELTRAIL 1.0 went online in Frankfurt and is ready for launch, with name rules, reporting and blocking.

On 6 October VELTRAIL’s public game server went online in a data centre in Frankfurt, Germany. Since that afternoon it has answered at play.veltrail.com, on the game’s own domain, so the server can be moved without a new app build. There is one server, and the 1.0 build sent to Apple knows where to find it. The game isn’t on the App Store yet, so for now the server is ready and waiting for launch day.

How online play works in 1.0

  • No account, no sign-in and no chat.
  • Quick match — or a private room: create one and share its code, or join a friend’s room by code.
  • Empty slots are filled by bots, and every bot is clearly labelled as one. We never pass bots off as people.
  • The server decides the score, the timer and the result.
  • If you are away for more than five seconds, a bot drives your courier; you can rejoin within 20 seconds, even after the app was closed.

Names, Report and Block

Players pick their own names, up to 16 characters. Before the first online game you accept a short set of name rules. A filter checks every name on the device and again on the server, and the server replaces a name it rejects with “Courier N”.

If a name is offensive, Report opens a pre-filled e-mail to the developer. Reports are reviewed within 24 hours, and offending names are added to the server’s filter. Block hides that name on your device — it shows up as “Hidden player #N” — and you can hide all other players’ names at once. Because there are no accounts, we can remove a name, but we can’t do anything about the person behind it. The privacy policy says so plainly, too.

Checked on a phone

Before the submission, the name rules, Report and Block (from the room and results screens) and hidden names were tried on an iPhone against the live server at play.veltrail.com. They passed all 66 checks, and two full online matches in private rooms ended with results identical to the server’s.

While you play, the server keeps your name and connection only in memory, plus the 20-second window for rejoining. Names and IP addresses are not written to disk or to logs. The details are in the app privacy policy.
